Since its inception in 1991, the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine has led its membership as a voice in the field of sports medicine. In January of 1997, a strategic planning team of the AMSSM, made up of members from its leadership, convened in Tempe, Arizona. Among the recommendations it made to its Board of Directors was the establishment of this foundation dedicated solely to the development, funding, and member / public relations in support of the Society’s missions and goals. While working closely with the Society, the Foundation seeks:
• To support education in sports medicine
• T o cultivate the development of future sports medicine physicians
• To foster research in sports medicine
• To recognize excellence and achievements of sports medicine physicians
In assuming these more external responsibilities of development, the Foundation frees the society to focus more clearly on its mission, including the initiation of goals, maintenance and reinforcement of existing committees, their programs and the initiation of new opportunities in education, research, fellowship and collegiality.
